After years of intensive research by the automotive industry, a new standard refrigerant for late model vehicles has been developed - R1234yf (OpteonTM YF)

This is a synthetic HFO (hydrogen, fluorine, and carbon) refrigerant co-developed by DuPont and Honeywell as a successor to R134a for automotive air-conditioning applications.

Automotive Electrical Designs is now offering the R1234yf (OpteonTM YF) for air con service and re-gas on a selection of late model vehicles. This will eventually replace R134a, currently used across all types of vehicles.

Why the new R1234yf?

From 1930’s to the mid 1990’s, R12 was the norm in the automotive industry. As an ozone depleting gas, it contributed highly to burning a hole in the ozone layer.

This is when R134a was developed to replace it. R134a is a non-ozone depleting gas, although it has its own environmental disadvantage: when allowed to escape, it creates a layer in the atmosphere causing a greenhouse effect - that means it traps in heat and contributes to global warming. This effect is quantified as the Global Warming Potential (GWP) - a relative measure comparing the amount of heat trapped by a certain mass of the gas to the amount of heat trapped by a similar mass of carbon dioxide.

The GWP of R134a (08) 9331 6996 is half of that of R(08) 9331 6996. Yet, R134a is still considered a significant threat to our ageing environment.

As a result, R1234yf has been chosen as the more environmentally safe solution with an Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) of 0.0 and a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of only 4. That is 335 times less than that of R134a!

What does R1234yf require in terms of service and repair?

Considerable upgrades to component quality and design, as well as compliance with new world SAE standards, have been engineered into R1234yf systems. This means these systems are designed to prevent potential leakage into the cabin.

R1234yf has similar thermal properties to R134a, therefore only minor system layout and design differences are required during service and repair. Faults can be diagnosed using the same methods as R134a.

The biggest difference is R1234yf’s A2L flammability rating This stands for mildly flammable and has implications for workplace health and safety procedures. Dangerous Goods rules apply to the storage, transport and handling of this gas.

Automotive Electrical Design is following the Australian Dangerous Goods Safety (General) Regulations 2007 and has trained technicians into using, storing and disposing of the new air con refrigerant, R1234yf, safely and responsibly.

To help our customer get ready for the next camping trip, an auxiliary battery system was installed and wired for this earlier model Toyota Prado.

The auxiliary battery runs power to three sockets in the rear of the vehicle. This allows a fridge or a

freezer to be constantly on. An extra power socket is used for connecting power to the external camping lights.

Installing and wiring a dual row LED light bar to this LandCruiser means its owner can now take advantage of greater light for night driving, especially on dark country roads.

Light bars and spot lights are wired via the high beam circuit and an independent switch. This allows the light bar or spot lights to switch off automatically when the high beam is turned off, preventing shining bright lights at oncoming traffic.

What are the legal requirements for driving with auxiliary LED lights and lightbars in Western Australia?

There are rules to be aware when using approved LED lights and light bars in WA. Any additional driving lights fitted to a vehicle must be designed and securely fitted in a way that:

minimises the likelihood of injury to a person making contact with the vehicle in an unfortunate event of a crash with a pedestrian;
does not obstruct the driver’s view of the road and traffic to the front or side of the vehicle;
the light emitted does not cause discomfort to the driver either directly or indirectly through devices for indirect vision and/or other reflecting surfaces of the vehicle; and
must remain switched off when high beam headlights are not in operation; and
must automatically switch off when high beam headlights are either turned off or the headlamps are dipped.

What is the best practice to maintain a healthy car Air conditioner for you and your vehicle?

During both the hot and cold seasons, it is useful to turn the air con on at least once a week for a few minutes to help prevent gas leaks. This also allows the compressor and system seals to stay lubricated.
To avoid breathing in too much CO2 (carbon dioxide), switch off the "recirculate" setting for long drives on the open road allowing fresh air into the vehicle. Having the recirculate setting on for long periods of time may cause headaches and drowsiness.
As harmful bacteria and fungus tend to grow in the car air conditioning system due to humidity building and temperature variation, we also recommend having the cabin heating/cooling system sanitised and the cabin air filter changed every (08) 9331 6996 km. Poor airflow and an unusual odour can indicate it's time to replace the cabin air filter.

The cabin air filter is responsible for filtering the air that is fed into the vehicle’s heating and air conditioning systems. It traps dust, pollen, and other foreign particles, preventing them from entering the vehicle and polluting the cabin.

Cabin air filters can get dirty and when excessively contaminated, they will cause restricted airflow for the air con system, reducing the overall cooling capacity and in the long run, even the air con fan motor performance.

The main reason why your air con is probably leaking

Most of the time, the issue with air con leaking is related to the air conditioning condenser.

The air conditioning condenser is made up of a series of tubes and fins usually made of aluminum; it looks and functions just like the vehicle's radiator.

The condenser has an inlet and an outlet for the circulation of the Freon gas. The purpose of the condenser is to remove heat from the refrigerant.

As the hot gas passes through the air cooled tubes, the gas condenses into a liquid. The condenser is located in the front of the vehicle and is vulnerable to foreign objects that can hit and puncture it.

Freon is able to leak from any holes in the condenser, causing the air conditioning system to work inefficiently, and eventually to completely stop working.

Because of the high pressures in the Air Con system, damaged condensers need to be replaced rather than repaired.

A regular service of your car air conditioning can help identify even the smallest leaks in time, before the condensers get too damaged, to the point where the only option is to replace them.

The condenser is located at the front of the engine bay, where it has access to cool air. The condenser, much like the radiator, is subject to damage and leaks caused by debris in the air.

Mirror-mount reversing camera for Holden Colorado

The problem this Holden Colorado encountered was a restricted rear view after a rear canopy was fitted for work purposes.

As a solution, we installed a mirror mount reversing camera system. We wired up the system so that the reversing camera would be switched on by ignition (not reverse trigger) so the image is showing all the time when driving. The unit also has the option to turn it off.

Most automotive reverse camera kits include an infrared red camera allowing for a clear image at night.

We installed a Redarc Tow Pro Elite version 3 to this 2020 Toyota Prado.

This installation included the brake controller switch insert that is made specific for this vehicle.

We've removed a switch blank from the switch cluster and installed the Tow Pro remote head.

We recommend the Tow Pro brake controller due to it reliability, user friendly operation and neat system for installation purposes. The Tow Pro has a proportional mode where the brake controller will apply the trailer brake at a level proportional to the vehicle's deceleration.

This is a late model 200 series Toyota LandCruiser that we've helped getting ready for a big camping trip ahead.

The main auto electrical accessories that we installed are:

a rear roof light, essential for camping

We connected all these accessories to the auxiliary battery system . Running accessories of the auxiliary battery will prevent the starting battery from going flat and the electrical accessories can continuously run while the vehicle is parked.

Toyota LandCruiser upgraded with two 4WD essential accessories:

The fit out included an under the bonnet dual battery system with:

Redarc BCDC1225D charger
Dual volt meter to monitor the charge rate of both batteries and

Trailer Plug Installation for Caravan Towing

12 pin trailer plug & Anderson plug to provide power to the caravan from the 4WD vehicle

This Toyota required a trailer plug for towing a caravan.

We've used a red and grey Anderson plug, as well as a a 12 pin trailer plug to assist the vehicle owner with providing power from his 4WD to the caravan.

The red Anderson plug was wired to power the Electronic Stability Control for the caravan suspension.

The grey Anderson plug was installed to apply charge power from the vehicle to the caravan battery system.

The 12 pin trailer plug is to power the lighting system.

A fridge control wire was also installed to power the fridge during travel.

A quick guide on what impacts your car air con efficiency

In order for an air conditioning system to work efficiently, it must produce the correct pressures on both the high side and the low side.

Any obstruction inside the air conditioning system can create excessive pressures on the high side and extremely low pressures on the low side.

When the pressures are not within specification, the air conditioning system will not cool efficiently, if at all.

Blockages can be detected by connected gauges to both the high and the low sides of the air conditioning system. Normally blockages are found in the condenser and the expansion device.

We recommend having your car air con serviced at least once a year. Here are some questions that you might want to ask your auto electrical provider:
