A brake controller is an electronic device that activates and controls the electric brakes of a caravan, camper trailer and boat trailer.
Electric brake controllers ensure the safety of yourself and other motorists when you tow a caravan, camper, car or a boat trailer.
According to Australian legislation, trailers of GTM (gross trailer mass) over 750 kg must have brakes. Trailers of GTM over 750 kg and not exceeding 2000 kg must have braking on the wheels of at least one axle. For a GTM of over 2000kg braking on all wheels is required.
Over-ride brakes may be used on trailers of GTM up to and including 2000 kg. Trailers of GTM over 2000 kg must have brakes operated from the driver’s seated position. These trailers must also have a breakaway system by which the brakes are automatically applied if the trailer becomes detached from the towing vehicle.,
The electric trailer brakes on your trailer (whether you're towing a caravan, a camper, a car or a boat trailer) need to be connected to the power of the tow vehicle and regulated by an electric brake controller.
