A brake controller is an electronic device specifically designed to activate and effectively control the electric brakes of various towing vehicles, including caravans, camper trailers, and boat trailers. Sending signals to the brakes enables a smoother and more responsive stopping experience, critical when handling heavy loads.

Electric brake controllers can also improve the safety of both you and other motorists on the road when you are towing a load. With a properly functioning brake controller, you can increase braking efficiency, minimise stopping distances, and improve the overall stability of your vehicle and trailer during transit.

Our product of choice is REDARC Tow-Pro™ Elite.

Australian designed and manufactured, the Pro-Tow Elite features two types of braking in one unit: proportional and user-controlled mode, with Active Calibration.

In accordance with Australian legislation, any trailer with a gross trailer mass (GTM) exceeding 750 kg is required to be equipped with brakes. For trailers with a GTM greater than 750 kg but not exceeding 2000 kg, at least one axle must have braking capability. For those with a GTM over 2000 kg, braking must be present on all wheels.

Over-ride brakes are permissible for trailers with a GTM of 2000 kg or less. However, trailers exceeding 2000 kg must feature brakes that can be operated from the seated position of the driver. Additionally, these trailers must include a breakaway system that automatically engages the brakes if the trailer becomes detached from the towing vehicle.

The electric trailer brakes on your trailer—caravan, camper, car, or boat—must be connected to the tow vehicle’s power supply and controlled by an electric brake controller.
